AS-2278-95/AA - May 4-5, 1995
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University commend CSU Summer Arts for its decade of successes in providing both high quality instruction and multicultural, worldwide experiences in the visual and performing arts to thousands of California upper-division and graduate students; and be it further
RESOLVED That the Academic Senate CSU urge the Chancellor to continue support for CSU Summer Arts recognizing its significant impact to students, faculty, and the citizens of California in the visual and performing arts.
RATIONALE: Since 1985, CSU Summer Arts has featured national and international artists and distinguished CSU faculty serving as educators and mentors to hundreds of students annually from diverse backgrounds, both within California and throughout the nation, in the visual and performing arts including music, dance, film, video, theatre, performance, visual arts, design, creative writing, arts education, and new technology. The two- to four-week program, offered on a host CSU campus, is the first program on the West Coast for pre- and post-professionals which emphasizes a multidisciplinary focus in the visual and performing arts. The quality of the program attracts talented and gifted upper-division and graduate students (through audition or portfolio) who work closely with the faculty and are featured in over 20 showcase festival performances annually in the local host community providing high quality art events to highly under-served areas of California. CSU Summer Arts is governed by CSU faculty and arts deans from all CSU campuses who select the participants and plan and coordinate the courses and festival performances and by a Director of Summer Arts.
