Commendation of Dr. Barbara Swerkes

WHEREAS, Barbara Swerkes has served with honor and distinction as a member of the Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) from 2000 through 2010, representing California State University Northridge (CSUN) with great energy and commitment; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Swerkes has offered her considerable talents to diverse ASCSU committees and systemwide groups such as the Teacher Education & K-12 Relations Committee (TEKR), Academic Affairs Committee, Faculty Flow Task Force, Financial Aid Advisory Council, CA Articulation Number System Coordinating Council, General Education Advisory Committee, CA Community College – CA State University Transfer Advisory Committee, Committee on Transfer (ICC), Joint (CSU/UC/CCC) Task Force on Transfer, and the Intersegmental Committee of Academic Senates; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Swerkes has held leadership positions in the ASCSU including Chair of the LDTP Advisory Committee and Member at Large of the Executive Committee; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Swerkes has unflaggingly worked on smoothing the transfer of students from the California Community Colleges to the CSU, especially through her work on the Lower Division Transfer Pattern (LDTP) project and should therefore be ordained the "Diva of LDTP;” and

WHEREAS, Barbara Swerkes has been extremely effective at facilitating intersegmental cooperation and good working relationships; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Swerkes is known for her considered, thoughtful opinions, her unfailing support of her colleagues on the ASCSU, and her ability to negotiate LA rush hour traffic with grace and good humor; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Swerkes has served with distinction on the CSUN Faculty Senate and Senate Executive; and

WHEREAS, In her nine years as women's track & field coach at CSUN, Barbara Swerkes trained some of the brightest stars to emerge in American track & field history, including many All-American and Olympic athletes; and

WHEREAS, Because of her outstanding exploits as head coach of the women's track & field program at CSUN—including leading her teams to AIAW National Championship conference titles from 1977-80, Barbara Swerkes has been formally inducted into the CSUN Matador Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Swerkes has dramatically increased the energy budget at CSUN for decades by burning vast quantities of midnight oil, even as a FERP faculty member; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Swerkes has a beautiful granddaughter (she has pictures!) in need of spoiling with grandmotherly affection; therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU express its deep gratitude to Barbara Swerkes for her many years of dedicated and valuable leadership and service; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU extend to Barbara Swerkes our best wishes as she begins what is certain to be a fascinating and productive next phase of her personal and professional life.
