Support Services and Troops to College
ATTACHMENT TO AS-2974-10/AA (Rev)
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate California State University (ASCSU) reaffirm the commitment and support in resolution AS-2844-08/AA (Rev) March 6-7, 2008 “Academic Senate of the California State University (CSU) Support of the Troops to College Initiative” and thus urge the Board of Trustees to request funding from the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs to be used specifically for the CSU Troops to College program in making available appropriate support to ensure the success of veterans returning to the college environment, and be it further
RESOLVED: That the ASCSU send copies of this resolution to the CSU Board of Trustees, CSU Chancellor, U.S. Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs, campus presidents, campus senate chairs, provosts, campus health directors, campus financial aid centers, campus veterans’ centers, counseling centers, and directors of Student Affairs.
RATIONALE: The CSU has made a commitment to the Troops to College Program. A large number of veterans will be returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and will likely experience difficult periods of readjustment to civilian life and the expectations of a college environment. The university system needs to commit to providing the student services resources necessary to support the special needs of veterans, and needs the financial resources necessary to adequately face these challenges. Resources at campuses have been cut back due to the California budgetary emergency and campuses will most certainly need additional funds to provide enhanced services for returning veterans.
