Commendation for Dr James Wheeler

WHEREAS, Dr. Jim Wheeler has been a member of the Academic Senate of the California State
University (ASCSU) since 1999, representing the California State University Maritime Academy; and

WHEREAS, Jim Wheeler has served actively on the Academic Preparation and Educational
Programs (APEP) and Teacher Education and K-12 Relations Committees for seven
years, including one year as Chair and five years as Vice Chair; and

WHEREAS, Jim Wheeler has served two years on the Academic Affairs Committee with one year as
Vice Chair; and

WHEREAS, Jim Wheeler has participated diligently on the General Education Advisory Committee
for nine years, during which he was Chair for one year and was a member of the Course
Review Subcommittee for three years; and

WHEREAS, Jim Wheeler was a dedicated member of the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM)
Development Committee for five years; and

WHEREAS, Jim Wheeler has served dutifully on the Early Assessment Program (EAP) Committee
for two years; and

WHEREAS, Jim Wheeler has served as Vice Chair for the CSU Statewide Senate Faculty Council
for the Channel Islands campus and The University Planning Council for the Channel
Islands Campus; and

WHEREAS, Jim Wheeler has served the University and the Academic Senate in many other
assignments; and

WHEREAS, Jim has lived up to his name by biking for fun and charity across California subsequent
to ASCSU plenary sessions; and

WHEREAS, Senator Wheeler has been a tireless advocate for plain speech and speaking the truth;

WHEREAS, Jim has been a strong voice for the support of shared governance in the CSU—financial
and other and has demonstrated this on numerous occasions with his impassioned,
principled and LENGTHY speeches to the Senate; and

WHEREAS, Jaydub has successfully completed many crossword puzzles while simultaneously
participating in aforementioned Senate discussions; and

WHEREAS, Jim Wheeler served the Maritime Academy in various leadership roles, including being
a member of the campus Executive Committee for more than ten years and being
instrumental in writing many of the campus senate bylaws and policies; and

WHEREAS, Gym is a well-loved, committed teacher, who is always willing to share his expertise
with his colleagues; and be it

WHEREAS, That the ASCSU thank Dr Wheeler for his many years of service and his significant
contributions to the ASCSU and the Maritime Academy; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU wish Dr Wheeler and his family all the very best in the years to come
and in his training for his cross-the-country bicycle trip, which is to take place in Spring
