Subject: CSU State University Fee Increase
At its meeting held on July 21, 2009, the CSU Board of Trustees approved a 2009-10 State University Fee (SUF) increase of 20%. This means that the State University Fee will increase for all CSU students (including students studying abroad through International Programs) effective fall term 2009. All IP participants have been sent an e-mail and a letter indicating the specific amounts of the new SUF for undergraduates, credential, graduate and nonresident students. If you are an IP participant and did not receive this mailing, please go to the web site for Admitted Students and click on 2009-10 Fee Increase Letter and Payment Form.
As you are probably aware, the State of California is in a severe financial crisis. The CSU faces a $584 million budget cut, the largest in the system's history. The reduction is the result of the state's attempt to close a $26.3 billion budget gap. Chancellor Charles B. Reed has said, "We have never before seen such a devastating cut in a single year. I am concerned because the CSU system has a national reputation for access, quality and diversity."
We recognize that this comes as students are preparing for departure to their locations abroad and that the added cost represents a financial challenge. The Office of International Programs will work with participants in coming up with a payment plan for the additional cost. For those on financial aid, they should contact their campus financial aid offices to see if additional funds may be awarded to cover the increase.
If there are further adjustments or updates regarding the fee increase, we will let you know as soon as possible. If you have questions, please contact Joyce Cury or Sharon Okashima in our office at (562) 951-4790.
