(May 29, 2009) – As California’s budget crisis continues to deteriorate, the leaders of the state’s three systems of public higher education – who represent 3.5 million students  - will testify before the State Conference Committee on the Budget on Monday, June 1 beginning at 2:30 p.m.

California Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott, California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed and University of California President Mark Yudof will detail the immediate and long-term impacts of the drastic cuts outlined in Gov. Schwarzenegger’s latest budget proposal.  Among the issues expected to be highlighted include enrollment, student fee levels, academic programs, student services, and the possible elimination of the Cal Grant program.

Both CSU and UC have already announced enrollment cuts for fall 2009, and the California Community Colleges anticipate access to more than 250,000 students will be denied as a result of the proposed $825 million budget reductions that are coupled with an additional $115 million in deferrals.  Under the most recent budget proposal by the Governor, in 2009-10, the CSU and the UC face reductions in State support between 16 and 20 percent.
