General Education Advisory Committee Report (GEAC)
Resolution Summaries
Academic Affairs (AA)
Jodie Ullman (San Bernardino), Chair
The Academic Affairs committee of the ASCSU has had an engaged, productive beginning of the year. In our September meeting, the vast majority of our time was consumed with discussions of EO 1100 (revised) and EO 1110 both issued during the summer.  We focused on EO 1100 (revised) and discussed potential issues that have emerged with this revision.   Ultimately, we decided that we would contribute, along with APEP and FGA, to a resolution asking for a delay in implementation of the changes in these executive orders. More »
Academic Preparation & Education Programs (APEP)
David Barsky (San Marcos), Chair

The recently released Executive Order (EO) 1100 (Revised) and EO 1110 dominated the discussion at APEP’s meeting on September 13. APEP crafted two resolutions during this meeting, and (since APEP is the committee that never sleeps) one more later that evening. The first of the APEP resolutions was folded into the combined FGA/AA-APEP resolution 3304 (On the Development and Implementation of Executive Orders 1100 (Revised) and EO 1110). It asked that campuses be given an additional year to develop new mathematics and English courses on the grounds that best practice in curriculum development is to allow for a period of reflection and smaller pilot project assessment prior to the introduction of wholesale change.

The Faculty Affairs Committee met on September 13, 2017 in Long Beach to begin the new academic year.  The committee was joined by its liaison, Vice Chancellor of Research Dr. Ganesh Raman.   The committee had a speaker from Human Resources and one from CFA.  Assistant Vice Chancellor, Academic Human Resources, Margaret Merryfield introduced a new employee, Carl Fischer who will assist with department chair and faculty development programs.  Research is being done on affordable housing options for new faculty in the high-cost areas.  She also brought up food and housing insecurity for faculty and staff. Fiscal & Governmental Affairs Committee (FGA)
Steven Filling (Stanislaus), Chair
Our September meeting was busy and a bit convoluted as our 17-18 Chair requested that members assist him with how the work of the committee has been handled over the past few years.  We reviewed the committee charge and discussed 16-17 activities with an eye toward continuing what worked.  Local legislative office visits were seen as productive and we agreed to continue those this year.  FGA members will be engaging in local office visits with legislators in their districts over the course of the fall semester.  We also talked through a recap of the Spring 17 Lobby Day.  FGA believes that our visits with elected officials and members of State Administration were effective and that our conversations had some influence on pending legislation and the senate budget allocation.
