Resolution in Honor of Senator Gary Hammerstrom

AS-2465-99/San Francisco - May 6-7, 1999

WHEREAS, Senator Gary Hammerstrom has been connected with the CSU since it was the CSC, having worked at San Francisco State College in the 1960s and early 1970s and received his M.A. in Interdisciplinary Social Science there in 1972; and

WHEREAS, Senator Hammerstrom has been a member of the Business faculty at San Francisco State University since 1978 and has filled many positions in academic governance there, including chair of the SFSU Academic Senate; and

WHEREAS, Senator Hammerstrom is widely acknowledged, along with Senator David McNeil, to have had primary responsibility for the success of recent efforts to bring CSU and UC admissions requirements into alignment, an historic undertaking that required high levels of tact, diplomacy, and patience; and

WHEREAS, Senator Hammerstrom demonstrated similar leadership and perseverance in efforts to reduce fees charged to students participating in International Programs to a level comparable to what they would have paid had they remained on their own campus, efforts that have recently come to fruition; and

WHEREAS, Service on the Academic Senate CSU provided Senator Hammerstrom not only with frequent occasion to practice his skill with puns but also with an occasional opportunity to demonstrate his skills in navigating the 710 and 105 freeways in record time when a late adjournment threatened to make senators late for their flights; and

WHEREAS, In consequence of the many meetings he attended in Long Beach, Senator Hammerstrom became so enamoured of the scenic splendors and gastronomic delectations of Long Beach that, in 1998-99, he took a one-year leave from his Senate position to accept appointment as Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; and

WHEREAS, When cautioned against becoming arrogant in his Chancellor's Office administrative position, Senator Hammerstrom responded that arrogance would be difficult given the three humbling adjectives in his title; and

WHEREAS, The Academic Affairs office of the CSU, recognizing ability when they find it, have wisely asked Senator Hammerstrom to continue for a second year, and he has accepted and resigned from his Senate seat; therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University extend its appreciation to Senator Hammerstrom for giving so generously of his time in serving the faculty and students of the CSU; and be it further
