Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the
Academic Senate of the California State University


WHEREAS, The Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) was established in 1963 to exercise the rights and responsibilities of faculty in the shared governance of the University, including acting as the official voice of the faculty in matters of systemwide concern and providing the means for the faculty to participate in collegial governance based on historic traditions and California law; and

WHEREAS, The ASCSU has made significant contributions over the last fifty years to the mission of the CSU and the quality of higher education in California; and

WHEREAS: A number of these contributions are documented in a report collating actions related to curriculum, faculty recruitment and retention, shared governance, strategic planning, pedagogy (including technology), and facilitating student success (; and

WHEREAS, Beyond these past contributions, the ASCSU continues actively to engage in the challenges and opportunities facing the CSU in the 21st century; therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the 2012-2013 ASCSU invite our colleagues in the CSU family to join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the ASCSU and the ASCSU’s significant contributions to shared governance and the mission of the CSU; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU distribute this resolution to the CSU Chancellor and Board of Trustees, CSU campus Presidents, CSU campus Provosts, CSU campus Senate Chairs, the California State Student Association, and the CSU Emeritus and Retired Faculty Association.
