Commendation of Faculty Trustee and ASCSU Senator
Bernadette Cheyne


WHEREAS, Bernadette Cheyne has served with great distinction on her home campus, Humboldt State’s, Academic Senate for the dramatically long run of 18 years from 1993-2011, as well as on the Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) from 2004-2011, and on the CSU Board of Trustees from 2011-2013, and

WHEREAS, At Humboldt State, Bernadette Cheyne led the campus senate from 1999-2001 and chaired Faculty Affairs, Educational Policies, Senate Appointments, and Student Affairs committees, and served in many roles and on a host of committees throughout her tenure there, too numerous to mention, and

WHEREAS, Bernadette Cheyne served as Vice Chair of the ASCSU from 2009-2010, was Chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee, again served on a host of system-wide committees too numerous to mention, but just to mention a few before the music starts up: the General Education Course Review Subcommittee, the Intersegmental Committee of Academic Senates, the CSU System Budget Advisory Committee, the Board of Trustees Honorary Degrees Subcommittee, and (there’s the music)

WHEREAS, In the role of Faculty Trustee, Bernadette Cheyne stepped into a great void left when that position had gone unfilled for years and throughout her tenure as trustee represented the faculty’s, and her own, deep commitment to shared governance, collegiality, and academic freedom with both grace and conviction, and

WHEREAS, Whenever Bernadette Cheyne rises to speak it is impossible not to be beguiled by her sonorous voice as well as by the rectitude of her argument, and

WHEREAS, Together with her colleague Senator Thobaben, Senator Cheyne braved the Humboldt fog and endured harrowing hours of airplane delays and cancellations, the latter often resulting in Thelma and Louise road trips, in order to get back and forth from the Golden Shore and her Senate duties there, and

WHEREAS, As an actor and teacher of acting, Bernadette Cheyne attained both regional and national prominence as cited in two Kennedy Center awards that recognize her extraordinary contributions to the teaching and producing of theatre, and

WHEREAS, Not only has Bernadette enacted the role of Brecht’s “Mother Courage” on stage, she has taken it to Long Beach for years both as statewide Senator and as Faculty Trustee; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That there be second and third and fourth acts in Bernadette’s career that continue to delight her colleagues and friends with her Puckish wit as well as to inspire them to emulate the courage of her convictions; therefore be it finally

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University wish Bernadette Cheyne well in her future endeavors and now rise to applaud her with a sincere, and most-deserved, standing ovation.
