Commendation for Associate Vice Chancellor Ron Vogel


WHEREAS, Dr. Ron Vogel has been a member of the California State University community for close to a quarter of a century; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Vogel received his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a specialization in the subject of juvenile justice; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Vogel served for more than two decades in the faculty ranks as both a professor of Criminology and department Chair, first, at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte and then again at California State University, Long Beach; and

WHEREAS, Professor Vogel established a solid scholarly reputation as the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles, through service on several editorial boards, and as the editor of the research journal Crime and Delinquency; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Vogel’s career eventually led him in the direction of higher education administration in which he served in various capacities including Dean of the College of Health and Human Services at CSU Long Beach and Provost at CSU Dominguez Hills; and

WHEREAS, this career path eventually brought him to the fabled Golden Shores and the position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in the California State University; and

WHEREAS, as Associate Vice Chancellor Dr. Vogel demonstrated an uncommon talent for data-driven analysis when it came to subjects such as course bottlenecks and the status of ethnic studies programs in the CSU; and

WHEREAS, equally importantly, Associate Vice Chancellor Vogel established a close working relationship with the Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) by patiently sitting through its plenary meetings, crafting the Chancellor’s Office responses to its resolutions, serving as liaison to its Fiscal & Governmental Affairs Committee, and – most importantly – by playing a critical role in helping the Academic Senate acquire, for the first time, a formal commitment from the Chancellor to fund the ASCSU with a designated budget line; and

WHEREAS, through these and other actions too numerous to mention Dr. Vogel has always demonstrated a strong commitment to shared governance in the CSU; therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University extend its heartfelt thanks to Dr. Vogel for his unflagging commitment to the academic mission of the CSU; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate declare Ron Vogel to be an “Official Friend of the Academic Senate of the California State University” and urge him to indulge freely in all the benefits that accompany such a designation; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate wish Ron Vogel a happy and healthy future in his current role as Vice Provost at California State University, Los Angeles.
