Alumni Council News and Highlights for CSU Alumni Leadership
Guy Heston

The California State University is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and the Alumni Council its 40th. This year has brought many special programs recognizing the role the CSU has played in the last 50 years in California's development.

The CSU has graduated over 2.6 million alumni into the world workforce and we recognized 50 of our industry-leading alumni in this year's Working for California project. In addition, fascinating facts about the history of the CSU campuses can be found on the 50th Anniversary website.

As an alumni leader in the CSU, thank you for everything you do to help make the CSU a welcoming place for our 412,000 students.

  • On Friday, July 22, Chancellor Reed met with the leadership at DreamWorks to discuss how the CSU can continue to prepare graduates ready to compete in the entertainment industry. CSU alumni already working at DreamWorks gathered with the Chancellor for a photo to show their campus and CSU pride!

  • The Alumni Council met via conference call for its Annual Meeting on June 22. The meeting had several important action items including a revision of the Alumni Council Bylaws, approval of the 2011-12 budget, election of officers, and an amendment to the Memorandum of Agreement between the Alumni Council and the Chancellor.

  • The 2010-11 year-end financials have been posted to the Alumni Council website. Due to prudent stewardship of funds by the Council officers, we exceeded income and reduced expenses in almost all categories. This has allowed the Council to eliminate registration fees for its two conferences this year for the two representatives from each campus while helping to keep valuable resources directed to campus activities. Copies of all our corporate accountability documents may be found here.

  • The Alumni Council Fall Conference will be hosted at Cal Poly Pomona September 9-10. The Alumni Directors will meet on September 8, prior to the conference. The theme of the Fall Conference is "Alumni Volunteer Engagement" and will feature a best practices presentation by CSU East Bay on their new online alumni mentoring program as well as facilitated workshops on volunteer engagement by OneOC.

  • The Alumni Council continues its efforts to advocate on behalf of the CSU. The Long Beach Press Telegram published a letter to the editor by Alumni Council President Guy Heston on June 1. Council member Doug Yavanian (Fresno) also had a letter to the editor published in the July 16 edition of The Californian. Council member Francine Oschin (Northridge) and Immediate Past-President Ken Stone submitted pieces to the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register, respectively. Speaking out on behalf of the CSU is an important role of the Alumni Council in representing the CSU's 2.6 million alumni as well as an important civic activity for our Council members who write in as private citizens.
