Learning Management System (LMS) Strategic Planning

ATS started a systemwide strategic planning process in mid 2005 to support campus' planning and implementation of learning management systems (LMS) to help CSU campuses work together to map the future use of e-learning at the CSU. All CSU campuses currently employ at least one LMS to support learning and teaching both on and off campus, and the technology is rapidly becoming a central part of the academic technology infrastructure.

Strategic Planning Tools

The goal of the strategic planning process is two-fold:

  • To develop a shared vision of LMS use within the CSU and opportunities for collaboration in meeting that vision.
  • To support and promote campus LMS strategic planning efforts so that campuses are best able to provide the infrastructure to support e-learning needs.

The outcomes of the 2005 planning process led to the creation of four LMS Initiatives which are now active and led by the CSU Directors of Academic Technologies (DAT):

LMS Business and Partnerships
CSU Consortium & Contract Management
Licensing and renewal
ASP Services
Escalation of issues

LMS Integrations and Migrations
IMS Standards
Peoplesoft Student Information System Integration
Portal Integration
Library Integration

LMS Open Source
CSU Open Source Consortium

LMS Best Practices
Recognizing Faculty Best Practices in LMS Use (particularly across disciplines)
Diffusion of these Best Practices across the CSU
