The California Pre-Doctoral Program

Program Description

The California Pre-Doctoral Program, initiated in the 1989/90 academic year, was developed cooperatively by the California State University and the University of California. It is designed to increase the pool of potential faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of California State University students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. Sally Casanova scholars are encouraged to continue their studies at the doctoral level, especially in the University of California. Inculcation of students in the profession is stressed through mentoring by faculty, involvement in formal and informal scholarly and research opportunities, interaction with doctoral-granting institutions, membership in professional associations, and attendance at professional conferences. Students are supported to attend events designed to interest students in graduate study and scholarly careers.

The California Pre-Doctoral Advisory Committee expects to identify 75 Pre-Doctoral Scholars (with 75 faculty sponsors) for 1998/99. A portion of the funding will help support the California Graduate Education Forum. The Forum, held for the first time in 1991, brings together promising juniors, seniors, and master's degree students for a series of workshops covering all aspects of graduate work.

The California Pre-Doctoral Program will also promote efforts to improve coordination of CSU master's degree programs with the doctoral programs of other institutions so that a better pipeline will develop. As in prior years, a modest amount of faculty travel will be supported so that CSU faculty can accompany the selected students to visit Ph.D. granting institutions to learn more about opportunities for doctoral study and to establish ongoing faculty-to-faculty relationships with faculty at the doctoral granting institutions. Support for attendance at a professional conference may be provided for students and their faculty sponsors. Each CSU campus receives a modest amount for supplies and services so that the campus-designated Pre-Doctoral Advisor can collect and disseminate information on doctoral study. A part-time systemwide Pre-Doctoral Program Coordinator will continue to coordinate these activities and to participate in and provide leadership for related programs, such as the California Graduate Education Forum.

Program Guidelines

Each CSU campus has a Pre-Doctoral Advisor who works with California State University faculty in targeted disciplines to identify and nominate eligible students at the junior, senior, or graduate level who have the potential for doctoral study. A systemwide committee, augmented by faculty and administrators from the University of California, has been formed and will select students for the program in 1998/99. Selected students will receive stipends to cover the expenses of travel to doctoral institutions or professional meetings and may receive support for scholarly activities during the summer of 1998. The funding for travel is intended to allow the student, accompanied by the nominating or sponsoring California State University faculty member, to visit at least two and possibly three universities to learn more about doctoral program opportunities. These funds may also be used, on the advice of the sponsoring faculty member, to support travel to a professional conference, to present a paper, or otherwise to contribute to the student's commitment to pursue and succeed in a doctoral program.

The summer stipend may be used to support students in scholarly pursuits at either a doctoral-granting institution or a CSU campus. Enrollment in a University of California summer program is strongly encouraged in order to permit CSU students to become acquainted with UC faculty in their disciplines with whom they might eventually work in doctoral programs.

Program Reports

The systemwide program coordinator will maintain a roster containing the name, institution, class level, ethnicity, sex, disability (if applicable), faculty advisor, and major of each student selected for the program. The systemwide coordinator will also keep records of arrangements made for each student, including participation in summer programs.

Campus Pre-Doctoral Advisors are requested to report on the activities of the Scholars and on the use of funds allocated for each student. Please use the reporting format provided on the next page. Two copies of this report are due on or before August 15 of each fiscal year and should be sent to Lorie Roth, Director, Administrative Services and Professional Development.
