Colleen Bentley is the Director of Special Projects for the California State University Office of the Chancellor, reporting to CSU Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer Ephraim P. Smith. She creates videos for the Academic Affairs Division, coordinates Board of Trustees’ presentations, works on honorary degrees, and writes speeches and other remarks for the Executive Vice Chancellor and others, such as occasionally for members of the CSU Board of Trustees. Colleen was the co-executive producer of the Nisei Diploma Project series of six DVDs, which were funded by a grant from the state library system. She focuses on various communications and marketing issues for the system and its 23 campuses, with a special emphasis on service learning and community engagement. Previously, she served 10 years as the CSU Director of Public Affairs, and before that was the manager of media relations. She has served as a speech writer for the CSU Chancellor. She has been with the Chancellor's Office since 1990.
Her past responsibilities have included external communications, media relations and public relations, acting as the chief spokesperson for the Chancellor and the CSU Board of Trustees. She has conducted media training for universities and other public/private institutions for more than a dozen years, and occasionally does consulting work on communications-related issues for various institutions. She previously worked at the University of California, Irvine, and was a newspaper reporter in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Her bachelor's degree is from California State University, Long Beach, and she did her graduate work at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
In her spare time, she serves as President of Leadership Long Beach and loves to travel.
