Fullerton: Center For Internships and Community Engagement (CICE)

CSU Fullerton is a comprehensive, regional university with a global outlook. It is located in Orange County, a technologically rich and culturally vibrant area of metropolitan Los Angeles and enrolls over 32,600 students making it one of the largest campuses in the CSU system. As noted in the CSU 2010 study “Working for California: The Impact of the California State University,” Cal State Fullerton generates $1 billion in economic activity annually, sustaining more than 8,700 jobs in the region and generating more than $65 million per year in state tax revenue. The campus has been named to the U.S. President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for three consecutive years ("with distinction" for 2008-09 for reporting over 1.3 million hours of service), and in 2008, earned the Carnegie Foundation’s prestigious “community engagement classification” in the joint category of curricular engagement and outreach and partnerships.

The Center for Internships & Community Engagement (CICE) develops off-campus placements, pre-service orientations, and ongoing support mechanisms that facilitate service-learning and academic internship opportunities. CICE staff collaborated with students to determine the appropriate organizational structure, roles and responsibilities, and training needed to support the 26 student leaders who support CICE programming. In fall 2010, student leaders --four (4) of whom work in the main office and four (4) of whom support specific programs and partners -- will provide support to students enrolled in service-learning courses. Four of the student leaders will also have responsibility for recruiting, training and managing service-learning students placed with local nonprofits. While the grant focused on developing these eight student-leadership positions, CICE required all 26 students to participate in the comprehensive three-day training.
