Fish Tracking

fish tracking

Kelp bass habitat use at Catalina Island Marine Science Center Marine Life Refuge.  Each colored line encircles the area used by an individual kelp bass.

The Shark Lab at CSU Long Beach, under the direction of Dr. Chris Lowe, studies fish movement and habitat use.  Dr. Lowe and his students implant acoustic tags in the fish, release them, and track them for 24-h periods using underwater hydrophones.  The fishes’ movements are then plotted over GIS layers to determine how they are using the different habitats.
