Chancellor's Special Communication-September 26, 2001

September 26, 2001
TO:         All CSU Presidents
FROM:    CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed
RE:         Tolerance

Please be reminded of the California State University system's commitment to provide a safe environment, free from harassment and discrimination, for all students and employees.

We all share in the outrage at the destructive terrorist acts of September 11th. But as President Bush and many other national leaders have reminded us, our nation's struggle is not against Islam, it is against terrorism. Violence and harassment against innocent people based solely on their race, ethnicity, or religion only compounds hatred. Such behavior runs counter to the atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding that is essential to our academic mission, and must not be tolerated in any way by our universities.

At the California State University system, our students and employees represent many different races, ethnicities, and religions. Our diversity is one of our great strengths as a system. I am proud of our ability to offer meaningful learning and working opportunities for people of many different backgrounds. That is why I urge you to ensure that our campuses are safe for and respectful of all individuals.
