Southwest Airlines

Recognition for Outstanding Achievement by a First Generation Student

California State University Foundation board member and Southwest Airlines Community Affairs and Grassroots Manager Lidia S. Martinez committed support from Southwest Airlines for a $6,000 scholarship for an outstanding first generation student.

Southwest Airlines has implemented a robust diversity inclusion and outreach program to develop a workforce that reflects the communities it serves. The corporation views inclusion as expanding the potential of all who are willing to demonstrate their abilities. This value aligns with the success of the California State University to advance the potential of first generation students who comprise nearly 35 percent of the student population.

Southwest Airlines is the largest airline in the United States. Established in 1971 and headquartered in Dallas, Texas, Southwest maintains excellent customer satisfaction ratings. The company has consistently been ranked by Fortune Magazine as one of the top twelve most admired corporations in the world.

Ms. Martinez has represented Southwest Airlines on the CSU Foundation board since 2008. She serves on numerous community boards and is involved in a variety of organizations dedicated to empowering the communities served by Southwest Airlines. She is also dedicated to supporting youth programs ranging from the Girl Scouts to the Heart of Los Angeles Youth (HOLA). Ms. Martinez has received numerous awards including the President’s Award, which is Southwest’s highest achievement award for employees, and the KPBS Local Hero of the Year Award in San Diego.
