Dolores C. Huerta

Co-Founder, United Farm Workers, AFL-CIO

California State University, Northridge

Cesar Chavez once said of Dolores Huerta that she is "totally fearless, both mentally and physically." It is through her courage that Ms. Huerta earned her place as one of the most respected women in the American civil rights movement. As co-founder and secretary-treasurer of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO, she provided national leadership in the fight for the rights of farm workers.

California State University, Northridge has benefited from Ms. Huerta's 30-year commitment to public education. CSUN students have worked as interns with the UFW and with "la escuelita," the small school in Delano, California, that educated the children of the farm workers. Ms. Huerta has addressed Northridge students on numerous occasions, challenging them to take seriously their obligation to work for social justice and inspiring them to become engaged citizens.

In recognition of her lifetime of service to the state of California and to the students of the California State University, the Board of Trustees of the California State University and California State University, Northridge are proud to confer upon Dolores Huerta the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
