Monica C. Lozano

Publisher & CEO, La Opinion

California State University, Dominguez Hills

Mónica C. Lozano, respected publisher and chief executive officer of La Opinión, the largest Spanish-language newspaper in the United States, has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to the community and education at all levels.

Born in Los Angeles to one of Southern California’s most prominent Hispanic families, Ms. Lozano’s grandfather, Ignacio E. Lozano, a Mexican immigrant, founded La Opinión in 1926. Family members have continued to lead the paper throughout its history, with the title of publisher passing from Ms. Lozano’s grandfather to her father and then her brother, with Ms. Lozano taking on the position in 2004. A respected business woman, her career took her from managing editor in 1985, to associate publisher, editor and president, before
becoming publisher and CEO.

Under Ms. Lozano’s leadership, La Opinión has more than doubled its circulation and increased its online presence. She also serves as senior vice president for Impremedia, LLC, the nation’s leading Spanish-language print and online news publisher. With her support and direction, La Opinión has broadened its focus to reflect the country’s diverse Hispanic community; placed a stronger emphasis on public service journalism; and partnered with nonprofits, private business and government to inform the growing community about health, immigration and
educational issues.

Her accomplishments are many: The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute honored her with the Medallion of Excellence for Leadership and Community Service Award. She also has received the Leadership Award from the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, the Catalyst Award from the National Association of Minority Media Executives, and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights’ Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award.

For her service to the community and the nation and her advancement of the common good of our global community, the Board of Trustees of The California State University and California State University, Dominguez Hills are proud to confer upon Mónica C. Lozano the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
