California State University Alumna Selected as
National Teacher of the Year

(April 23, 2012) – The Council of Chief State School Officers today announced Rebecca Mieliwocki, an alumna of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo who also earned a teaching credential from California State University, Northridge as the 62nd National Teacher of the Year. Mieliwocki, who teaches seventh-grade English at Luther Burbank Middle School in Burbank, California will be recognized by President Barack Obama during a ceremony at the White House on Tuesday, April 24.

"The California State University is proud to count Ms. Mieliwocki among our 2.6 million alumni and we congratulate her on receiving such a prestigious award," said CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed. "Teacher education is one of the great strengths of the CSU and we are always proud when one of our graduates is recognized for their achievements in the field."

The CSU produces nearly 10,000 teachers annually and is by far California’s primary source of teachers. More than half of the state’s teachers are graduates of CSU campuses. Through its Math and Science Teacher Initiative, the CSU has doubled its output of math and science teachers over the previous 10 years and now produces over 1,500 teachers annually in those subjects who are especially important in preparing the workforce for the state's high-growth sectors.
