CSU Receives Record Number of Undergraduate Applications for Fall 2008

(Feb. 1, 2008) - The California State University has received a record 515,448 undergraduate applications for fall 2008 admissions as of January 29. This represents an increase of 47,967 applications received to date from the same time period last year.

Faced with a growing state budget deficit, Gov. Schwarzenneger has proposed a $312.9 million cut to the CSU budget approved by the board of trustees for the 2008-09 fiscal year. The board’s proposed budget would provide for enrollment growth of 2.5 percent.

In response, the CSU closed admissions on Feb. 1 to first time freshmen at all but seven of its campuses, with Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Sacramento State, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay continuing to accept applications for first time freshmen until March 1. However, enrollment will be capped at the 2007/08 levels for the 2008/09 academic year, with 10,000 qualified students not admitted to any CSU campus. In addition, the deadlines do not apply to transfer or graduate students.

Applications from prospective freshmen have increased from 365,831 to 415,569 over last year, with that number expected to increase at those campuses still open. These statistics do not include paper applications, which are submitted in person at the 23 CSU campuses.

Several of CSU’s largest and most impacted campuses also received record numbers of undergraduate online applications including San Diego State (61,492), Long Beach (60,338), Fullerton (44,461) and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (37,760).
