Contribution Highlights
The fiscal year of 2011-2012 was a special year for the California Maritime Academy. Donors “gave back” to Cal Maritime and supported many of our unique programs, including the following highlights:
- The CMA Foundation’s Boat Donation Program was the recipient of a 50-foot Delta Marine Pilothouse motor yacht. The donor, a Cal Maritime alumnus, noted that Cal Maritime provided the training, which led to his professional success leading his family’s ship maintenance and environmental management business. The proceeds from the vessel will be used to create a $150,000 named scholarship.
- 2012 was also the year of the successful completion of the $2.6 million Training Ship Golden Bear Navigation Lab, which brings state-of-the-art simulation to sea for Cal Maritime’s cadets. The Navigation Lab includes a full mission bridge simulator, as well as workstations used for navigation training. The facility provides students with a more effective sea training program by giving them more time-on-task navigation training, increasing their celestial and terrestrial navigation proficiency skills, and providing a venue that fosters more one-on-one navigation instruction with faculty. The lab was incorporated into the 2012 international training cruise, a highlight of which included a transit through the Panama Canal.
- Cal Maritime continues to be successful in developing training contracts with a variety of industry partners. The campus entered into a $9.6 million collaboration with Chevron to establish a maritime crisis management training center and also a collaboration with STERIS Corporation to assist in the development of shipboard biological decontamination systems.
