Contribution Highlights
- Capping the final year of President Albert Karnig’s administration, more than $550,000 was raised to support CSU San Bernardino student scholarships, particularly the President’s Academic Excellence Scholars. The Karnigs made a large personal gift and issued a challenge that ultimately exceeded the goal set through the President’s Retirement Gala. The gifts are expected to bolster the number of possible scholarship recipients, which now exceeds 300.
- CSUSB’s beautiful new Murillo Family Observatory, which opened to the public in the fall of 2011, was adorned with a life-size statue of Pauline and George Murillo, gifted by their children who are members of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. More than 1,000 area residents have toured the facility so far, along with several elementary school groups, delivering on the late Pauline’s vision of an educational facility tied to the Native American custom of studying the heavens.
- Thanks to a $100,000 contribution from Kaiser Permanente, the new Nursing Skills Lab sports the finest in equipment, including patient dummies, which simulate real situations that nurses often face on the job. The “patients” can sweat, become feverish and receive shots, as well as deliver babies. This simulation offers students the highest caliber learning experiences.
- The outpouring of community sympathy on the passing of the mother of Stater Bros. Markets Chairman of the Board and CEO Jack Brown resulted in more than $100,000 being contributed to CSUSB’s Rose Brown Scholarship Fund. This fund is aimed at adult re-entry students and those who are widowed or single parents.
