California State University Maritime Academy
Cal Maritime is one of the 23 public California State University campuses located on 92 waterfront acres on the edge of the San Francisco Bay, 30 miles from San Francisco. The university is residential, academy-sized and offers a rigorous, structured, hands-on, and global experience for all its uniformed cadets. The uniform is not indicative of any military service obligation as there is none, but the uniform does signify the highly professional, advanced leadership, and teamwork focus that defines the common university experience that turns students, once strangers, into a committed, caring, cadet corps community. Cadets choose from 7 majors across three schools and 8 departments including business, international
strategy and security, marine transportation, mechanical
engineering, oceanography, and facilities and marine
engineering technology. The only degree-granting maritime academy on the west coast, Cal Maritime is not a military academy, though some cadets will be licensed by the
Coast Guard as 3rd mates or 3rd assistant engineers. Cadets may minor in select majors, as well as law and mathematics. Select cadets who are admitted to the Strategic
Sealift Midshipman Program (SSMP) will minor in Naval Science. Cal Maritime alumni are prepared for high-paying careers at sea and on-land, so cadets study a diversity of subjects that highlight the economic engine comprised of the worlds waterways including international business and logistics, supply chain, maritime and environmental policy, marine science, and mechanical system and physical plant design and operation.
