Joyce Ahlgren, M.A.

Outstanding Lecturer Award, 2013-14
San Bernardino
Department of Mathematics

I teach because my students challenge me, aggravate me, thrill me, humble me, amaze me, delight me…in other words, they give me the opportunity to be a better teacher.
Joyce Ahlgren, who has been a full-time lecturer at CSU San Bernardino’s math department since 2003, was named the university’s inaugural recipient of the Outstanding Lecturer Award.

Ahlgren received praise from both colleagues and students for her teaching. One student wrote that she shows students the importance of learning math correctly. A colleague wrote that Ahlgren is a dynamic, funny, cheerful and enthusiastic teacher.

Ahlgren spearheads the Intensive Mathematics Program for Undergraduate Studies and is coordinator of the Early Start Program, which is designed to help remedial students not considered ready for general mathematics. She is the department’s developmental mathematics coordinator and advises and mentors adjunct faculty teaching developmental math courses and creates exams common across courses.
