Quality teaching and scholarship embodies intellectual empowerment and social justice.
In the short time that Dr. Duke Austin has been at East Bay, he has had a remarkable impact on students, faculty, staff and his community. Not afraid of "difficult" conversations, he has engaged all of us in looking honestly at issues of diversity and social justice as they impact our lives. His students praise his ability to make them think, want to raise their hands, and contribute. With his colleagues he produced a paper entitled, "Building an Inclusive, Accessible, and Responsive Campus at CSU East Bay," and he has been a national speaker on urban ethnography and immigrant children. Duke "walks the talk," and shows every indication that he will continue to publish on social issues that will shape our society. For all of these reasons, CSU East Bay's faculty recognized Duke Austin as our Outstanding Scholar on Issues of Diversity, Social Justice, and Multiculturalism for 2016.
