Provost’s Award for Faculty Service, 2014-15
Fresno
Department of Communication

Collegiality is not simply being friendly – it is an attitude that values ongoing dialogue where we invite others to continue the conversation rather than seeking to “win” the argument.
My work chairing the Academic Senate at Fresno State is driven by a desire to represent the faculty by promoting an organizational culture that respects the ideals of shared governance. Shared decision making is based upon mutual trust and respect, which extends beyond faculty membership on committees and recommendations on policies to the everyday conversations that demonstrate a genuine interest in the ideas of our colleagues. When we choose to reach out to our colleagues for advice, even when we aren’t structurally obligated to do so, we show our trust and respect.

Shared governance is the foundation of the California State University system, and I am honored that the Provost’s Award for Faculty Service recognizes my commitment to that ideal.
