Dirk Baron, Ph.D.

Faculty Leadership and Service Award, 2015
Bakersfield
Department of Geological Sciences

Working with K-12 schools to improve Earth Science teaching has been one of the most rewarding endeavors of my career.
Dr. Baron has made service to the community a priority. Most significant are his outreach efforts to improve science education at K-12 schools and recruit students into science majors. He was instrumental in creating “dual-credit” geology classes at local high schools. Students completing the classes can receive CSUB credit that can be transferred to other universities.

He also organized several community events at CSUB. Engineers Day brings over 500 Kern County high school students, teachers, and many exhibitors and speakers to the campus once a year. Many high school students have been motivated by these events to pursue degrees in CSUB’s new engineering programs.
