Eileen Barrett, Ph.D.

Sue Schaefer Faculty Service Award, 2012-2013
East Bay
Department of English

It’s simple: I tell students they belong in these classrooms and it’s my privilege to teach them. Once these unique, amazingly diverse students believe this message, the real learning begins.
A professor in the Department of English at CSU East Bay since 1987, Eileen Barrett teaches writing and literature courses for undergraduate and graduate students. She takes pride in the diversity of CSUEB’s students and in their individual appreciation for how language and literature enrich understanding. Her publications include an anthology of women’s literature, a volume on teaching literature, and articles that reflect her commitment to the scholarship of teaching.

A strong believer in shared governance and faculty rights, Barrett has served on the Academic Senate and all its standing committees, including several terms chairing the Faculty Affairs Committee. During her 15 years of service in the Office of Faculty Development and the Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching, she developed workshops on teaching and learning and professional development, and mentored faculty through the tenure, promotion, and range elevation process.

The Sue Schaefer Award honors CSU East Bay’s most dedicated faculty members for their excellent and sustained service to the faculty.
