William “Bill” Hoese, Ph.D.

Carol Barnes Excellence in Teaching Award, 2015-16
Fullerton
Department of Biological Science

I teach because I hope I can help change lives. ... Teaching is what I do. It's who I am. Teaching is not one-way; it's a dynamic flow of information, an interactive dialogue.
Biological science professor William Hoese's way of connecting with students is by putting himself in their shoes. He embodies 'learning science by doing science' in comprehensive and integrated ways that lead to successful student outcomes.

Beyond the classroom, he co-directs the NSF-funded Southern California Ecosystems Research Program and helps lead the Biology Undergraduate Research Scholars Training Program — both provide students with field research experiences. Throughout 15 years on the Cal State Fullerton faculty, he has connected with nearly 3,000 students, preparing them for future careers in ecology and environmental biology.

In recognition of the support and inspiration Dr. Hoese gives his students and for numerous contributions to the campus community, he received the 2014-15 Carol Barnes Excellence in Teaching Award.
