Frederick L. Nelson, Ph.D.

Promising New Faculty Award, 2014-15
Fresno
Department of Curriculum and Instruction

I like to find and build places where faculty can play nicely together. Our best work emerges from our friendships, not our assigned tasks.
Fred Nelson’s approach to teaching is a learner-centered one, where he shares responsibility for course decisions with his preservice teacher students, as demonstrated by this statement that appears frequently in his syllabi: “The community of learners will determine the criteria for evaluating this assignment.”

Dr. Nelson collaborates regularly with colleagues from across campus, in projects such as the “Reading About Water” initiative of the Interdisciplinary Water Cohort at Fresno State. This approach to a common read is an example of Dr. Nelson’s commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration that is invitational rather than assigned.

Dr. Nelson joined the faculty of the Kremen School of Education and Human Development in 2012.
