Florence Cassel Sharma, Ph.D.

Promising New Faculty Award, 2015-16
Fresno
Department of Plant Science

I strive to integrate research and real-life learning experiences into my teaching so students can feel empowered, engaged, and prepared to address the water challenges of today and tomorrow.
With the long-lasting drought currently plaguing California, Dr. Florence Cassel’s research on improving water-use-efficiency and management practices in irrigated agriculture directly addresses the community’s needs for sustainable solutions to water scarcity. As Assistant Director of Research for CSU Fresno’s Center for Irrigation Technology, her highly reputed research program stems from her collaboration with CSU/UC faculty, the Water Cohort, government agencies, growers, and industry partners. Funded through extramural grants exceeding $3.5 million, her research has been essential in providing her interdisciplinary students with real-life hands-on experiences that relate classroom knowledge to its applicability in the industry.

Dr. Cassel was nationally recognized as the 2015 faculty leader in irrigation by the Irrigation Association.
