Today, the Biden-Harris Administration signed an executive order that will advance equity in economic and educational opportunities, strengthen the capacity of Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) to provide a high-quality education, and increase opportunities for HSIs to participate in and benefit from federal programs.
The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity Through Hispanic-Serving Institutions will make investments to advance educational and economic opportunities for Latino communities across the country through partnerships with HSIs.
The California State University Chancellor Mildred García joined nearly two dozen HSI champions and Latino community leaders for the ceremonial signing.
The following statement can be attributed to CSU Chancellor Mildred García:
“On behalf of the entire California State University (CSU) community, I offer my heartfelt gratitude and deepest appreciation to President Biden for signing this landmark executive order that will provide critical support to Hispanic-Serving Institutions across our great nation. This historic action builds upon this Administration's unwavering efforts to expand educational opportunities for Latinx students – opportunities that ultimately result in lives transformed, families elevated, communities enriched, and our democracy strengthened.
As the first Latina chancellor of the CSU, it was a profound honor, both professionally and personally, for me to join fellow champions of HSIs and Latinx communities nationwide to witness and celebrate this consequential act. Today's signing will not only help advance the CSU's educational mission, but it also powerfully reflects our core values of inclusive excellence, social mobility, authentic access to higher education and equity in all its dimensions."
Twenty-one of the CSU's 23 universities are HSIs, and almost half of its more than 460,000 students are Latinx.
