Dr. Juliana Fuqua is an Associate Professor of Developmental, Health, and Social Psychology at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona). She helped implement flipped classroom pedagogy to lower the rate of repeats in a bottleneck upper division mechanical engineering course. The flipped classroom was associated with a reduction in the number of failures by 50% with two interventions over a two year time span. Student evaluations also demonstrated students preferred the instructor’s performance in the flipped classroom experience. Dr. Fuqua, with the assistance of a colleague and a team of undergraduate research assistants, implemented a mixed-methods research design to assess the impacts of the flipped classroom. The assessment included pre- and post-course surveys and focus groups to understand how the classroom environment contributed to student success. The undergraduate students involved in the research component have all been accepted to graduate programs. Dr. Fuqua’s leadership and efforts in the research collaboration resulted in multiple learning opportunities for students of engineering, psychology, and sociology.
