California State University Channel Islands
Angela Timmons is driven to make positive change in her community and works tirelessly to
create a more equitable and inclusive society. She previously worked at California State
University Channel Islands from 2013 to 2019 in Counseling and Psychological Services, often
providing support in Black student identity development and empowerment. As a staff member
at CSUCI, Dr. Timmons established a family scholarship to support the university’s Black
student population. Prior to her work at CSUCI, she served as a social services director for the
County of Ventura for 13 years.
Her ongoing passion for mental health propels Dr. Timmons’ professional work. She provides
regular training facilitation for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and Health Care
Agency. She also serves as a lecturer at Oxnard College and Ventura College, supervising
students studying social work and family therapy.
Dr. Timmons cares deeply about finding ways for the Black community to connect to one
another and connect with the larger Channel Islands community. Her ongoing service to Ventura
County and, specifically, to the City of Oxnard, is admirable and inspiring. She works with the
Community Advocacy Coalition of Ventura County, serves on the local Juneteenth celebration
organizing committee and supports the annual birthday celebration for Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr., and contributes to town hall meetings. She is an active member of the Delta Sigma Theta
sorority, giving generously to their local chapter, as well as other organizations including CSUCI.
Dr. Timmons is also a talented singer, and her passion for gospel singing has galvanized
numerous relationships she holds in the community.
In recognition of her work, Dr. Timmons has received the St. John’s Hospital Geropsych
Program Outstanding Employee Award, a service commendation from the Ventura County
Mental Health Board and the Employee of the Year Award from the CSUCI Division of Student
Affairs. She is a graduate of Clark Atlanta University and Columbia College with degrees in
social work. She received her doctorate in public administration from the University of La Verne.
In recognition of her advocacy for student success and mental health in the Black community, the
Board of Trustees of the California State University and California State University Channel
Islands are proud to confer upon Dr. Angela Timmons the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane
Letters.
