He began his teaching career in 1976 as a science and mathematics teacher at Bakersfield High School and started coaching at his high school alma mater, West High. While still teaching, he returned to CSUB to further his education, earning both an M.A. degree and an educational administration credential.
Continued in the classroom until 1989 when he began his administrative career as dean of students at East Bakersfield High, followed by assistant principal of instruction/technology at Bakersfield High School.
After receiving a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of La Verne in 1994, he served as director of business administration for the Kern High School District, principal of Bakersfield High School, and Kern High School District associate superintendent for instruction.
In addition to an impressive career in administration, he has taught at the college level at Bakersfield College, University of La Verne, and Point Loma University. He served as superintendent of the Kern High School District, California’s largest 9-12 high school district, for 10 years before retiring in 2014.
