Villanueva, a disabled combat veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, joined the Wounded Warrior Project as associate director of government affairs in 2022.
He was appointed associate national legislative director in November 2017 at Disabled American Veterans’ National Service and Legislative Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and was promoted to assistant national legislative director in August 2019. In 2014, Villanueva began his DAV career and was eventually promoted to work as a veterans’ representative before the Board of Veterans Appeals from 2016 to his current appointment. He is a member of and is active with national chapters and served as the DAV Department of Virginia’s legislative chair from 2016 to 2018.
His work focuses on the advancement of DAV’s public policy objectives to promote and defend reasonable and responsible legislation. Villanueva routinely testifies before Congress on behalf of the more than one-million-member organization on education, employment, survivors’ benefits, compensation benefits and other specialized services for wartime disabled veterans and their families.
He was selected to participate in the Panetta Institute for Public Policy Congressional Internship Program in 2012, interning for California Congressman Jeff Denham. There, Villanueva assisted with the Veterans Jobs Caucus.
Villanueva is the son of a farmworker-turned-factory worker and a veteran of the Iraqi War. He served in the Marine Corps from 2000 to 2004 as an infantryman assigned to Alpha Company, a Raider company, in the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, and earned the Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation and Naval Unit Citation
