Professional licensed pharmacist and former owner, operator and managing partner of Bakersfield Drug Co., Inc. for more than 20 years, during which time he purchased and managed several pharmacies in both Kern and Orange counties.
Was with Bakersfield Memorial Hospital from 1993 to 2018, first as vice president and chief operating officer, then as president and CEO. Van Boening was part of the transition team that negotiated a progressive affiliation agreement with Catholic Healthcare West.
Under his leadership, the hospital grew significantly, including construction of a second patient tower and service line expansions in cardiac, neuroscience, obstetrics and all surgical specialties. It became a Stroke and Cardiac Center of Excellence, opened the first children’s medical center with pediatric intensive care unit services and developed comprehensive burn services.
In 2018 he became president and senior vice president of operations for Dignity Health Central California and in 2021 president and market leader of Dignity Health Nevada.
He is a 25-year-plus Rotary member and has served as president of the Kern County United Way, Rotary International Board of Directors, Board of Directors and president of Bakersfield Country Club. He also is a past California division president and lifetime board member of the American Cancer Society. He also serves on the CSUB Foundation Board of Directors.
