Taking on technology goliaths like Netflix, Amazon, Apple and Google, Phillips is no stranger to navigating competitive landscapes. As Chief Technology Officer for Hulu, he's in charge of keeping systems running for the streaming service that offers live and on-demand TV and movies to over 28 million subscribers.
Phillips is responsible for leading the technical and product strategy to drive innovation for consumers and partners. He has published several papers with NASA and was granted a patent for his work on expanded object models.
In his role, Phillips oversees Hulu's entire Technology and Product organization, spanning engineering, data center operations, network and broadcast operations, information technology and program management, as well as product management, user experience and product development.
Phillips recently returned to Humboldt County to share his professional and personal experiences with students of his former elementary school and high school and with local college students. His story has been an inspiration for rural students to dream big and see the value of connecting with others.
Following his visit to Humboldt County, Phillips and his wife Cindy made a gift of $250,000 to support graduating seniors of his former high school to attend Humboldt State. The scholarship will range from $2,000 to $4,000, helping to remove key barriers for rural students attending college.
