Served as the first African American mayor for the city and county of San Francisco.
First African American to serve as Speaker of the California State Assembly and longest-serving Speaker in California history, 1980-1995.
Re-elected 16 straight times to the California State Assembly where he served from 1964-1995.
Was the youngest chair of the Committee on Ways and Means and also chaired the Revenue and Taxation Committee.
Has served as both a trustee of the California State University and regent of the University of California.
