Sykes serves as city manager of the City of San José, reporting directly to the mayor and city council, leads a workforce of more than 6,400 employees and oversees a $3.7 billion annual operating budget for America's 10th largest city.
First hired as an engineering trainee with the city in 1987, Sykes was appointed city manager in 2017. In his role, he is responsible for the administration of day-to-day municipal operations and the implementation of city council policies.
As city manager, he is focused on near-term priorities for San José, the capital of Silicon Valley—a global innovation center with one of the largest concentrations of technology companies and expertise in the world.
An active volunteer at San José State, Sykes currently serves on the campus's Engineering Industry Advisory Council.
