In addition to her academic leadership, she is a rear admiral, U.S. Maritime Service (ret.) and captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve (ret.) and has served in active duty, receiving the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, the National Defense Medal and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
President of California State University Maritime Academy from 1990-96, making her the first woman to serve in this role at a maritime academy.
Received the Girl Scouts "Cool Woman Award" in 2004 and Woman of the Year from Charter 100 in 2007.
