Randell Iwasaki began his career at the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in 1983, culminating in his appointment by Governor Schwarzenegger as director of Caltrans in 2009. He received the Charles H. Purcell Award for managerial excellence at Caltrans, given by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials; and is the recipient of the “Doers, Dreamers, and Drivers” award, given by Government Technology Magazine.
Iwasaki is currently the leader of state and local transportation at Amazon Web Services, and is the founder of the GoMentum station, an autonomous vehicle-testing station. He is partnering with technology and automotive companies to develop the next generation of transportation solutions.
Among other accolades, Iwasaki is the recipient of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ Thomas H. MacDonald Memorial Award for meritorious contributions to the art and science of highway engineering. In 2016, Eno Transportation and Shared Mobility Strategies identified him as one of the top 10 public sector transportation innovators in the nation.
Iwasaki donated an Intelligent Transportation Systems Laboratory to the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo College of Engineering and serves on advisory boards for the college and the departments of civil and environmental engineering. Through guest lectures and mentoring, he supports the student chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers at Cal Poly as well.
