What

A 4-day I-Corps™ Bio-Entrepreneurship Workshop, including BIO International Convention (BIO 2022) exhibition access.

When

June 12-15, 2022 (Sunday evening reception + three full days Monday – Wednesday)

Who

Early-career life science researchers from groups underrepresented in biotechnology research organizations. Research-active undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and assistant professors from universities and colleges nationwide are eligible to participate. Researchers from Minority-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges and Universities are especially encouraged to apply.

How

Participants accepted to the BIO I-Corps 2022 workshop will be notified by email. Participants will subsequently be given information on travel, lodging, and meals after completing the participation survey. Travel and lodging expenses will be reimbursed and meals at the in-person sessions will be provided.

2022 Event Schedule

  • Sunday, June 12: Arrive in San Diego, evening kickoff (optional Diversity Summit before kickoff)
  • Monday, June 13: All-day workshop
  • Tuesday, June 14: Morning training, Afternoon at BIO 2022
  • Wednesday, June 15: Morning at BIO 2022, afternoon Lessons Learned and Reflection. Depart San Diego

  • ​​Experience working in diverse teams to identify and solve problems
  • Understand evidence-based entrepreneurship as taught by NSF I-Corps™ nodes and sites nationwide
  • Apply evidence-based entrepreneurship concepts via customer discovery at the BIO 2019 exhibition
  • Learn how to maximize efficiency in learning and networking in a conference environment
  • Learn about life sciences commercialization

​WORKSHOP DETAILS


The BIO 2022 I-Corps Bio-Entrepreneurship workshop is a 4-day immersive in-person experience held in conjunction with the BIO 2022 Conference in San Diego, Ca from June 12-15, 2022.

Participants from across the United States gather to work with biotechnology industry professionals to learn about biotechnology commercialization, grow professional networks and explore entrepreneurial opportunities that build on basic research.

During the day, participants will be fully immersed in teamwork including homework and interviews with potential customers, experts and mentors at the BIO 2022 conference.

The workshop will require your full commitment during all scheduled activities. Plan to be fully involved in activities from 8 am – 6pm each day followed with homework in the evening. You may find yourself having working dinners. Please note: there will not be time to explore San Diego, Ca.

Eligibility: The workshop is open to U.S.-based, early-career researchers from underrepresented groups in biotechnology research organizations. Researchers from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges and Universities, and minority-serving institutions in U.S. states and territories are especially encouraged to apply.

Research-active assistant professors, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to participate. We welcome and encourage applications from faculty and students in all disciplines related to the current practice of biotechnology, including but not limited to life sciences, physical sciences, clinical sciences, math, computer science, agricultural science, and engineering.

Selection Criteria: Participants will be selected by the organizers based on a complete, thoughtfully-crafted application, the applicants' research background, lack of previous technology transfer training, and a desire to learn about biotechnology commercialization. Selection decisions will be made in April and communicated by email to addresses supplied by applicants in this application. Participant expenses, including travel, lodging, meals, and transportation will be covered by the program.

BIO 2022 I-Corps Bio-Entrepreneurship Workshops applicants do NOT need previous commercialization experience, a developed venture concept, or any intellectual property in hand. The workshop is designed for curious researchers and nascent academic entrepreneurs from universities nationwide and will be based on case studies supplied by the organizers, not the participants' research-based ideas.

NOTE: The workshop is not useful to researchers who already have started down a commercialization pathway (completed other I-Corps workshops or courses, filed a provisional patent application, licensed intellectual property, received SBIR/STTR funding, etc.).
