CSUSB student winning the Best Student Poster Presentation Award in an international conference on Data Science. Meanwhile, the university is preparing to launch new Data Science programs, backed by continued grant funding and collaborative partnerships.
Nathan Kelly, a master's student at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), earned the Best Student Poster Presentation Award at the prestigious 11th IEEE International Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics (DSAA 2024) held in San Diego, CA, from October 6th-10th, 2024. This achievement coincides with CSUSB's upcoming launch of new Data Science programs, supported by ongoing grant funding and collaborative industry partnerships, reinforcing the university's commitment to cultivating student success in this field.
In addition to Nathan's award, four CSUSB students—Alexis Luevanos, Vamsi Sivakavi, Calvin Glisson, and Nathan Kelly—were honored with the IEEE DSAA Student Travel Award. This recognition underscores the university's efforts to support student participation in global conferences.

These conference presentations also mark the end of the NSF-funded DS-PATH: Data Science Career Pathways in the Inland Empire project. The project was funded for $1.5 million over the past 3 years. During this time, the DS-PATH project supported more than 30 undergraduate students' research and helped build new Data Science degree programs at CSUSB, including a minor and a certificate in Data Science. “We are proud of our students' achievements and the growing impact of our Data Science programs," said CNS Dean Sastry Pantula. “Their success at DSAA 2024 demonstrates the quality of research and education we provide at CSUSB."
Dr. Yunfei Hou, Principal Investigator of the DS-PATH project, shared exciting news: “We're thrilled to announce that we've recently received approval from the CSU Chancellor's Office to develop a new B.S. in Data Science. This program will further enhance our offerings and prepare students for the growing demands of the field."
The new B.S. in Data Science program will be a collaborative effort between the School of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics. To further develop its data science program, CSUSB has received continued funding of $1.275 million from the California Learning Labs' GLADS-PATH project. This project funds a partnership between CSUSB and seven higher education institutions, including University of California, Riverside (project lead); California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; Chaffey College; Pasadena City College; Moreno Valley College; Riverside City College; and Norco College.
The project team, led by Dr. Yunfei Hou (PI) and including Drs. Qingquan Sun, Jeremy Aikin, Ronald Salloum, and Hani Aldirawi, is overseeing this development. The B.S. in Data Science program is currently in the planning stage, and the project team is seeking to engage other departments to contribute to the data science major, aiming to enhance its interdisciplinary nature and create a robust, inclusive program.
