CSU Trustee Emeritus Kenneth Fong Scholar

My goal is to mentor the next generation of scientists and to champion diversity, equity and inclusion.

Alexandra Brown struggled with anxiety and depression while attending community college. Her grades suffered as a result. She was eventually diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. With treatment and time, Alexandra began to soar.

Now a student at CSU Bakersfield, Alexandra has presented at several national and international conferences to support her graduate research, which is being used to effect change in aquatic ecology research. She is pursuing a master’s degree in biology, studying microplastic pollution in aquatic environments, and its effect on animals.

Leading the university’s effort to protect the endangered San Joaquin kit fox, Alexandra has raised awareness among students and the community. She is also active in efforts to restore the Kern River.

Alexandra plans to pursue a doctorate with the goal of becoming a research professor. As a Black and Hispanic woman who has a disability—underrepresented populations in the aquatic sciences—she hopes to foster a more diverse and inclusive learning environment.
