California State University, Chico
CSU Chancellor Mildred García Scholar
Luz Gonzalez learned to prepare herself for
school as a child and walked alone each
morning because her parents left for work at
5 a.m. These challenges tested her courage
and resilience and stoked her determination
to succeed.
As an undocumented student raised in a low-income community, Luz never thought she’d
be able to attend college. But today, she
is majoring in liberal studies at Chico State
and has received recognition for academic
excellence and perseverance in her studies.
Luz is active in tutoring and mentoring
programs, aiming to support students facing
obstacles similar to those she has overcome.
She also volunteers with nonprofits focused
on educational equity and empowerment.
After her baccalaureate, Luz plans to obtain a
master’s degree and teaching credential. Her
goal is to teach at elementary schools and help
students from underprivileged communities
achieve their educational dreams.
