California State University, Sacramento
William Randolph Hearst Foundation Scholar
Perla Tellez has encountered challenges on
her educational journey. The first-generation,
low-income student struggled to pay for her
education and says she made mistakes as
she navigated the higher education landscape.
Through everything, Perla is proud of all
she’s overcome.
She transferred from Sierra College to
Sacramento State and is majoring in economics.
She is learning how to enact policies that
alleviate poverty, promote income equality and
advance sustainable development strategies.
During her first year at the university, Perla
joined the College Corps program and
participated as a fellow at the California Mobility
Center, a nonprofit organization that provides
access to programs and resources to accelerate
the pace of clean mobility in California. At
the center, Perla assisted with workforce
development classes.
After graduation, Perla is excited to help the
environment in a positive way, benefiting and
supporting communities.
